The CHP is currently (2023) Turkey's largest opposition party. It is the oldest political party in Turkey, founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of the modern Turkish Republic. The CHP describes itself as a modern social democratic party which is faithful to the fundamental principles and values of the Republic of Turkey. The CHP was responsible for the introduction of far-reaching political, cultural, social and economic reforms.

The party has its origins in various rebel groups that arose during Turkey's War of Independence. It was formally founded as a political organization on September 9, 1923 and declared the establishment of the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923. The party has since existed in various forms. It was banned for a period under the military junta in the early 1980s, like several other political parties. Turkey was a one-party state from its foundation until the end of World War II with the CHP in power. Since 1950, the CHP has formed minority governments a few times and has otherwise been the largest opposition party.

The CHP is a center-left party supported primarily by secular middle-class and liberal religious voters, but also retired generals, government bureaucrats, academics, university students, left-wing intellectuals and trade unions.

The meeting lasts approx. 1½ to 2 hours depending on the group's interests and takes place in CHP's Istanbul office. Usually, it will be the provincial president of the CHP party who meets with the group. If he/she is not present, it will be the Vice President or someone else from the headquarters in Ankara. Emphasis is placed on the meeting being interactive, the party representative will be very happy to answer any questions you may have, so it is important that you are well prepared and curious.
