La Défense district including La Grande Arche
La Défense is a relatively new business district, west of the city of Paris, which was built after the Second World War.The classical architecture of Paris has been replaced by skyscrapers and modern buildings in concrete and steel. The only element from former times is the statue of La Défense de Paris, which was opened in 1883 and gives this district its name.
The triumphant arch of the Danish architect von Spreckelsen - La Grande Arche - was built in 1989. The new triumphal arch is formed as an enormous hollow cube and its archway is large enough to fit the Nôtre Dame Cathedral. It is no longer possible to get up the stairs of the triumphal arch, but you have a very good view of Paris while standing under the arch.
